Welcome. I'm Dr Becca Knowles Bevis.
I am an experienced, compassionate, and down-to-earth clinical psychologist, committed to providing high quality, sensitive, evidence-based psychological support. My background is in working with people who have experienced trauma, but my area of special interest and expertise is perinatal, parental and parent-infant mental health. This means that I provide highly specialist psychological treatment to people who are facing challenges that are in some way connected with their journey to parenthood. Although my work is predominantly focused around issues relating to pregnancy, birth and parenting, I do keep a number of spaces in my practice for people (aged 21 years and over) who are struggling with something that is not directly related to their own path to parenthood. Whatever has brought you to this page, and however you have found yourself here, you are very welcome to get in touch with me to ask about the support I provide. If I am not in a position to be able to help you myself, I will always try to signpost you to somewhere or someone else who can.
Most NHS services define the perinatal period as spanning the time from conception to baby's first birthday, but the scope of the service I offer is much broader than this because I recognise that it's very common for struggles related to pregnancy, fertility and parenthood to occur outside of this time period. You may be enduring gruelling fertility treatments, feeling unsure about whether you want to get or stay pregnant, navigating an unexpectedly long and bumpy road to conception, grieving the loss of a longed-for pregnancy or baby, or feeling traumatised by a difficult birth. Perhaps your children are older - getting ready to for the first day at school, or even leaving home - and it's now that you are facing the biggest emotional challenges of your parenting journey. Perhaps the idea of becoming a parent felt straightforward to begin with, only for painful memories of your own childhood experiences to come rushing back uninvited, leading you to reappraise relationships and events that you may not have thought about for years. You might be pregnant and feeling worried about how you'll bond with your baby, or you might have a newborn and be experiencing symptoms of depression, PTSD or OCD that make it really hard for you to be the parent you want to be. Or maybe you are dealing with the impact of hormones, navigating perimenopause and parenting at the same time. However your story goes, please know that it can help to find a safe place in which to tell it, and I am here to listen.
How I Work
There is always more than one way to address a psychological difficulty, and I will work with you to find the approach, or combination of approaches, that suits you best. I will be alongside you to help you understand your thoughts and emotions, to feel clearer about what is keeping you stuck, and to find ways to change and grow in the ways that are most meaningful to you.
The cornerstones of my practice are collaboration, respect, authenticity, integrity, compassion and humility. It's very important to me that these values underpin and guide every conversation and intervention. I encourage your active involvement at every stage of treatment, and I will provide a safe and supportive environment within which you can take on both the challenges and the rewards of therapy.
My comfortable, quiet, and private consulting room is in Wallingford (OX10), conveniently located with plenty of parking and good public transport links. I also offer online appointments if this is more convenient for you.
